Sam Smart is a hard-hitting southpaw boxer based in Sennen Cove, Cornwall. That's right, Sennen Cove, a stones throw from Lands End.

 It's not an area known for its boxing, though locals still remember Zachy Nicholas, who would have become one of Britain's greatest ever boxers had it not been for the Second World War. Nicholas is still spoken of with awe, not least because of his unusual training regime he used to run up and down Cove Hill with bags of coal on his shoulders.

Unusual Training Regime

Sam also has an unusual training regime: being a pro surfer. I'm sponsored by Relentless Energy and Surftech, and surf as much as I can, he says. Surfing is all about upper body strength, co-ordination and explosive power like boxing. So, surfing helps my boxing, and boxing helps my surfing . . .

Every time there's a decent swell, Sam will be in the sea near his home. He'll also be running on the beach, hitting the heavy bag in his yard, or training at the local amateur clubs anything to keep him lean, fit and ready for a worldwide first: his debut as a pro boxer, at middleweight, at the same time as being a pro surfer.
